Invictus
William Ernest Henley
The thoughts of death are running through the speaker’s head. With this, he still thanks God for his unconquerable soul, because he felt He is the reason he is still surviving tuberculosis of the bone.
The speaker was very tough mentally. Eventhough ailment was taking over his life, he would not let it ruin him completely. So he still continued to write while in bed to use his time wisely.
The shade is the place he would go after he died. There, he would no longer be able to see all the people that were there for him at the hospital. Inspite of suffering, he still hid his fear from everyone, to show them he is unafraid.
Whatever he encounters in life, or whatever life throws at him, he is the ‘master of his fate’ and can manage his own life. With the authority he has over his life, he can proceed on the road of his choice. Thus, he is the ‘captain of his soul’.
